During the week of September 26 - 30, 2005, the Hazardous Devices Unit of the Kentucky State Police held a training seminar at Trooper Island. Also participating were bomb technicians from Louisville Metro Police, Lexington Metro Police, Owensboro City Police, West Virginia State Police, Cook County Illinois Sheriffs Police Department, and the Montgomery County Tennessee Sheriff's Office. The training allowed each of the technicians to participate in various scenarios. The technicians used robots to investigate and dispose of dangerous explosive devices while operating from a safe distance. The robots are not only used for explosives, but have been used to assist other units in barricade and hostage situations. Most agencies represented used the Andros series of robots that are manufactured by REMOTEC (www.remotec-andros.com). A subsidiary of Northrop-Grumman, REMOTEC is based in Tennessee. Representatives from the company were on hand during the week to aid in instruction. L-Tech Enterprises of Eubank and Ideal Products of Lexington, Kentucky also presented programs on products available from their companies for law enforcement use.
