KSP Trooper Struck While Conducting Stop

(LEBANON JUNCTION.) - Kentucky State Police Post 4 in Elizabethtown is investigating a two vehicle accident that included a Kentucky State Trooper being struck outside of his vehicle while conducting a traffic stop. On August 30, 2014 at approximately 3:48 EST, Trooper Sam Shacklette initiated a traffic stop for a speeding violation at the 107 mile marker on Northbound I-65. The violator's vehicle, along with Tpr. Shacklette's State Police cruiser were parked on the right hand shoulder of the Interstate in a highway work zone just inside the Bullitt Co. line. While Tpr. Shacklette was making his initial approach on foot to the violator's vehicle, he and the vehicle he was approaching were simultaneously struck by the front of a 2002 Ford SUV being driven by Louis Edward Dunn (43) of Bonnieville, Ky. Tpr. Shacklette was thrown approximately 50 feet and landed in the shoulder of the roadway. He was transported by ambulance to University Of Louisville Hospital where he remains in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries. There were no other injuries reported. Louis Edward Dunn was cited for Failure To Give Right Of Way To Emergency Stopped Vehicle, Operating On An Expired Operators License, No Insurance. KSP was assisted on the scene by Bullitt Co. EMS, Shepherdsville Fire Dept, Ky Dept of Fish and Wildlife, and the Lebanon Junction Police Dept. The investigation is still under investigation by Trooper Brad Riley.
