KSP Investigates Fatal Accident On Interstate 24

Hopkinsville, KY. (July 21, 2017) – The Kentucky State Police is investigating a single vehicle collision that resulted in the driver being killed. The collision occurred at approximately 3:11 P.M., just west of the 73 mile marker in Christian County.

Preliminary investigation revealed that John Mecum, 75 years old, Sarasota, FL, was operating his Chevrolet Pickup Westbound on Interstate 24 For undetermined reasons, Mr. Mecum’s vehicle rolled over into the median and came to rest upside down. Mr. Mecum was not wearing a seatbelt.

John Mecum was pronounced dead at the scene by Christian County Deputy Coroner Zach Lamb. Passengers Jennifer Mercer, 48 years old, and Carson Mecum, 8 years old, were transported to Jeanie Stuart Hospital with minor injuries. Ms. Mercer wasn’t wearing her seatbelt. Carson Mecum was wearing his seatbelt.

Trooper Michael Dennis is investigating the collision and was assisted at the scene by Trooper Billy Over, Sergeant Zack Jones, and The Trigg County Sheriff office, the Christian County Sheriff Department, Hopkinsville Fire/EMS and Christian County Rescue Squad.
