Nine Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (Sept. 4 through Sept. 9)
Date of News Release: 09/10/2007
(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that nine people died in nine separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Tuesday, Sept. 4 through Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007.
Seven of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and six of the victims were not wearing seat belts. One of the fatalities was the result of a motorcycle crash and one was the result of an ATV crash. Neither victim was wearing a helmet. Three of the fatalities were the result of crashes involving alcohol.
Single-fatality crashes occurred in Boone, Casey, Fayette, Floyd, Fulton, Jefferson, Laurel, McCracken and Union counties.
Through Sept. 9, preliminary statistics* indicate that 578 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2007. This is 34 fewer than reported for this time period in 2006. Of the 464 motor vehicle fatalities, 269 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 71 motorcycle fatalities, 40 were not wearing helmets. Of the 21 ATV fatalities, 17 were not wearing helmets. Twenty-one pedestrians and one bicyclist have been killed. A total of 135 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
