2006 Governor's Impaired Driving Enforcement Awards Presented
Date of News Release: 12/12/06
(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) -Law enforcement officers, agencies and individuals from across the state were recognized for outstanding achievement at the 2006 Governor's Impaired Driving Enforcement Awards ceremony held today at the Galt House in Louisville.
The Kentucky State Police Honor Guard performed the Presentation of Colors, followed by the singing of the National Anthem by Trooper William Gregory. Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement Commissioner Greg Howard provided the Invocation for the ceremony.
Kentucky State Police Commissioner Jack Adams was joined by Justice and Public Safety Cabinet Secretary General Norman E. Arflack in presenting awards to 192 officers from 187 law enforcement agencies for their extraordinary efforts in reducing impaired driving (see attached list).
"In Kentucky alone, there were 5,458 alcohol-related collisions in 2005," said Adams. "As a result of those collisions, 220 people were killed."
"Last year, you contributed to the 28,785 total arrests in this state. Let us not forget that each arrest for impaired driving may in fact be a life saving effort," added Adams.
Justice Secretary Norman Arflack also addressed the award recipients. "This award ceremony recognizes your work and dedication to saving lives of Kentuckians," said Arflack. "These officers are proof positive that the problem of driving under the influence can, and will be overcome."
Angela Leigh, executive director of Mothers Against Drunk Driving Kentucky (MADD), recognized two organizations for their dedication and commitment to the DUI Standards Project. The DUI Standards program partners law enforcement with prosecution and the judiciary to identify strengths and weaknesses in DUI enforcement, prosecution, and adjudication to overcome barriers within the DUI system.
The recipients for these awards were the Hardin and Madison county attorney's offices. Jenny Pitts accepted the award for the Hardin County Attorney's Office and Marc Robbins accepted for Madison County Attorney's office.
"You can have tough laws and tough enforcement, but without tough outcomes in the court system, the public just will not get the message that drunk driving is a serious crime," said Leigh.
In addition, Ms. Leigh presented Captain Eric Walker, Commander for the Governor's Highway Safety Program (GHSP) and Therese Richerson GHSP Program Manager with outstanding service awards in recognition of their exceptional leadership, innovation and dedication in support of DUI enforcement and prosecution.
