100 Days of Summer Heat

(Henderson, KY.) - Speeding is one of the top factors contributing to traffic crashes across Kentucky and the nation. Approximately 14,000 people in the U.S. die in speed-related crashes each year. In Kentucky, speeding contributes to nearly 9,000 crashes every year, 35% of which result in injuries or fatalities. Studies show that motorist are driving at much higher speeds than ever before. Tragically, survivial is less likely in high-speed crashes, regardless of whether occupants were using a safety belt or not.

Throughout the summer the Kentucky State Police will join with area law enforcement and seven other southeastern states in this regional effort to reduce traffic fatalities. We will be conducting traffic safety checkpoints in high crash location in your community.

Through June, 30th, 425 people have died in vehicle crashes across Kentucky. Of the 425 deaths, 245 were not wearing a seatbelt, 103 motorist were belted, 25 pedestrians killed, 3 children killed were in a child safety seat, 33 unknown restraint usage, 6 bicyclist and 10 have died on motorcycles.

In the Kentucky State Police Post 16 district, 17 people have died in motor vehicle crashes compared with 13 deaths through the same reporting period last year. Of the 17 deaths, 10 were not wearing a seatbelt, 5 were belted and 1 unknown seatbelt usage. Of the 17 deaths in our district, 5 of the people killed were ejected from their vehicle. One bicyclist has died when she was struck by a motor vehicle.

To report a speeding or drunk driver contact the Kentucky State Police at 826-3312 or 685-3927. Give a description of the vehicle and as much information as you can about the vehicle. You do not have to provide you name. Getting involved, can save a life.
