Trooper Critchelow Presented the Commissioner's Commendation

Date of News Release: 08/09/2005

(Henderson, KY) - Effective this date, Trooper Jerry Critchelow, Unit 405, is hereby presented the Commissioner's Commendation for his outstanding achievement in keeping with the highest tradition of the Kentucky State Police

Trooper Critchelow made a traffic stop in Ohio County on U.S. 231 on April 8, 2005. The vehicle was occupied by three white males and while speaking with the driver, Trooper Critchelow sensed something was wrong. He ran a check on the license plate and discovered that the registered owner of the vehicle had an active warrant for his arrest. Trooper Critchelow asked Mr. Poppe to exit the vehicle and was speaking with him when Mr. Poppe fled on foot. Trooper Critchelow gave chase as Mr. Poppe ran through a field, down an embankment and into a creek, which Trooper Critchelow had to swim across to subdue and arrest Mr. Poppe. Trooper Critchelow later learned that Mr. Poppe was involved in over 150 burglaries in the Louisville, Kentucky area and Floyd County in Indiana.

Trooper Critchelow also arrested, Matthew Shaw and these two individuals helped solve a significant commercial burglary ring where several hundred thousand dollars of merchandise was stolen. Trooper Critchelow's actions in this situation were exemplary and his feeling that something was wrong led to these arrests and a significant burglary ring being shut down. He went above and beyond what would normally be expected and his actions showed he had no regard for his personal safety when he swam across the creek to subdue a wanted felon.

Trooper Critchelow's determination, commitment and professionalism exemplifies those standards held in highest regard by the Kentucky State Police.
