Fatal Collision on US 23 in Lawrence County

Date of News Release: 02/05/2008

(Ashland, KY) - Kentucky State Police in Ashland are investigating a two-vehicle collision that claimed the life of a Jenkins, KY resident. The collision occurred on US 23 about one mile south of Louisa. Cable and Gartin were both travelling northbound and were both transporting coal. Cable's vehicle struck Gartin's vehicle in the rear causing Cable to lose control. Cable swerved across the southbound lanes and struck an earth embankment on the southbound lanes of travel. The vehicle overturned and subsequently caught fire. Lawrence County Coroner Mike Wilson pronounced Cable dead at the scene.

Both north and southbound lanes had to be closed and traffic was diverted through the city of Louisa. This was due to the coal spill from the Cable vehicle. The northbound lane opened around 1130 hours and southbound lane still remains closed until the collision scene is cleared.

Cable will be sent to the state medical examiners office in Frankfort for an autopsy.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation by Trooper Claxon.
