News Release

Investigation of Hancock County Jail

Date of News Release: 02/26/2008

(Henderson, KY) - On December 12, 2005 Axton was indicted by a Hancock County Grand Jury on one count of Abuse of the Public Trust Greater than $10,000.00 and four counts of Promoting Contraband in the first degree.

Axton was charged on January 06, 2006 with the above offenses.

Today, February 26, 2008 Axton was scheduled for trial in Hancock County Circuit Court. Axton plead guilty prior to trial to an amended charge of Abuse of the Public Trust less than $10,000.00. The four counts of Promoting Contraband in the First Degree were dismissed. Axton is to appear in Hancock Circuit Court on April 04, 2008 for final sentencing.

(Henderson, KY) - The Kentucky State Police are investigating a report of alleged financial misconduct by Hancock County Jailer Mike Axton. The complaint alleges that fees paid to the jail by inmates on the work release program are not being remitted to the fiscal court properly.

On 03/28/05 Kentucky State Police officers and a representative of the Kentucky Department of Corrections visited the facility and a search warrant was executed. Jailer Axton and two staff members were interviewed and are cooperating with the investigation.

No charges have been filed in connection with this case, and the investigation is continuing.
