Shooting Investigation in Henderson County

(Henderson , KY) - Kentucky State Post 16 received a complaint of a disturbance at a residence on Smith Staples Road in Henderson County at approximately 1:30 a.m. upon arrival; units discovered two people had been shot at the residence.
George R. Reynolds went to the address at approximately 1:30 a.m. and got into a verbal altercation outside the residence with his daughter, Serena Kirtley. During the course of the argument, George R. Reynolds shot Serena Kirtley in the abdominal area with a handgun. At this point, Serena Kirtley went back into the residence to obtain assistance from her husband.
While on the telephone with Henderson County 911 dispatch, George R. Reynolds entered the residence and began looking for both occupants. Serena Kirtley and her husband locked themselves in their bedroom and heard another gunshot a short time later.
George R. Reynolds died of an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head. George R. Reynolds was pronounced dead at the scene by the Henderson County Coroner.
Serena A. Kirtley was transported to St. Mary's medical center in Evansville, Indiana where she underwent surgery for the gunshot wound. She was placed in the trauma intensive care unit following surgery and is currently listed in critical/stable condition.
An autopsy is scheduled for George R. Reynolds in Madisonville at 9:00 a.m. on 7/13/2008. Kentucky State Police was assisted at the scene by the Henderson County Sheriffs Department, Henderson County Ambulance Service, and the Henderson County Coroners Office. Kentucky State Police Detective Brian Whittaker is continuing the investigation.
