Update to the 5 Person Fatality on I-65 in Hart County

Date of News Release: 03/19/2008

(Bowling Green, KY) - David H. McGrath was traveling Northbound on I-65 near the 62 mile-marker. Mr. McGrath's vehicle hydroplaned on the rain slick roadway. Mr. McGrath's vehicle skidded across the median into the southbound lanes. Mr. McGrath's vehicle struck southbound Myra Lawson's vehicle head-on. Mr. McGrath's vehicle was then struck in the passenger side by southbound Michael Giles' vehicle. Mr. McGrath's vehicle came to final rest partially in the median. Ms. Lawson's vehicle came to final rest off the right shoulder. Mr. Giles' vehicle came to final rest in the median. Heavy rain was falling at the time of the crash. All occupants were seat belted. All five victims were pronounced deceased at the scene by Hart Co. Coroner's Office. Jennifer Lawson was transported to Hardin Memorial Hospital where she was treated and released.

The five victims have been identified as:
David H. McGrath age 49 of Auburn, KY
Megan S. McGrath age 15 of Auburn, KY
Madeleine K. McGrath age 52 of Auburn, KY
Myra Lawson age 51 of Elizabethtown, KY
Cassandra Lawson age 22 of Elizabethtown, KY

Date of News Release: 03/19/2008

(Bowling Green, KY) - The Kentucky State Police are currently investigating an accident at the 61 MM southbound I-65. 5 people are confirmed dead at this time. The accident involved a pickup truck, a van, and a tractor trailer and occurred during a period of heavy rain. 3 occupants of the pickup were killed, and 2 occupants of the van were killed. More information, including the names of those involved, will be forthcoming as the investigation progresses. Motorists are urged to avoid southbound I-65 at the 61 MM for the next few hours.
