Eighteen Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (June 19 through June 25)

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 18 people died in 17 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, June 19, 2006, through Sunday, June 25, 2006.

Preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in three of the 17 crashes. Two of the crashes involved motorcycles and 15 involved motor vehicles. One of the victims was a pedestrian. Six of the victims were not wearing seat belts, six of the victims were wearing seat belts, and the seat belt status of three of the victims is not known. One of the two motorcycle victims was not wearing a helmet.

One double fatality crash occurred in Lincoln County. Two single-fatality crashes occurred in Jefferson County and two in Pike County. The remaining single-fatality crashes occurred in Adair, Allen Butler, Carter, Christian, Clay, Fayette, Grant, Hardin, Knott and Rowan counties. The pedestrian fatality occurred in Daviess County.

Through June 25, 2006, a total of 398 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 32 fewer than reported for this time period in 2005. Of those 398 fatalities, 23 were pedestrians and 32 were motorcyclists, 17 of whom were not wearing helmets. Of the 340 motor vehicle fatalities, 221 victims were not wearing seatbelts and the seatbelt status of 28 of the victims is not known.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
