Date of News Release: 07/23/2007
(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 12 people died in 12 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, July 16 through Sunday, July 22, 2007.
All 12 of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and five of the victims were not wearing seat belts. The seat belt status of three victims is unknown at this time. Five of the fatalities were the result of crashes that involved the suspected use of alcohol.
Jefferson County reported three single-fatality crashes. Single-fatality crashes also occurred in Calloway, Floyd, Henry, Jackson, Lewis, Lincoln, Marion, Mason and Ohio counties.
Through July 22, preliminary statistics* indicate that 466 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2007. This is 26 fewer than reported for this time period in 2006. Of the 378 motor vehicle fatalities, 218 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 51 motorcycle fatalities, 30 were not wearing helmets. Of the 19 ATV fatalities, 15 were not wearing helmets. Seventeen pedestrians have been killed and a total of 107 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
