Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Joins National Brake Safety Week Effort Highlights Dangers of Faulty Brake Systems on Commercial Vehicles

Owensboro, Ky. (August 25, 2025) — The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) Division will take part in Brake Safety Week, a nationwide traffic safety initiative designed to reduce crashes caused by defective or inadequate braking systems on large trucks and buses. From August 24 through August 30, 2025, KSP officers and inspectors will conduct focused inspections and remove from service any commercial vehicles found with brake-related violations.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) reports that brake issues consistently rank as the leading cause of vehicles being placed out of service during roadside inspections. Poorly maintained or improperly installed brake systems can significantly reduce a vehicle’s ability to stop, creating serious risks for both drivers and the traveling public. This year, there will be an emphasis on inspecting drums and rotors, which can affect a vehicle’s brake efficiency.

Lieutenant Brandon Goodman, West Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Spokesperson, says Brake Safety Week is an essential reminder of how critical brake maintenance is to roadway safety.

“Our officers and inspectors are dedicated to ensuring Kentucky’s highways remain safe for everyone,” said Goodman. “The trucking industry is vital to our state’s economy, and this initiative encourages companies to take proactive steps in maintaining safe fleets.”

Brake Safety Week is a component of the CVSA’s Operation Airbrake Program, which promotes safer commercial motor vehicle operations throughout North America. More than 3.4 million brakes have been inspected since the program’s inception in 1998. The effort coincides with Brake Safety Awareness Month, during which law enforcement agencies across the country work to educate drivers, mechanics, motor carriers and owner-operators about the importance of regular brake inspections and maintenance.
