Kentucky State Police Participates in the World’s Largest Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Safety Program
HENDERSON, Ky. (May 12, 2026) – The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) Division is committed to enhancing roadway safety by focusing on the enforcement of commercial vehicle regulations and driver education. One key component of this mission is routine commercial vehicle inspections. As part of this ongoing effort, KSP will participate in International Roadcheck, a high-volume, three-day inspection and enforcement initiative from May 12-14.
Organized by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), International Roadcheck brings together inspectors from the United States, Canada and Mexico for a concentrated effort to improve compliance with federal safety regulations. The initiative is recognized as the largest enforcement program of its kind, with an average of nearly 15 commercial vehicles inspected every minute during the 72-hour period. Since 1988, more than 1.8 million inspections have been conducted through this effort. Officer Michael Smith, West Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Spokesperson, emphasizes the importance of this initiative.
“Efforts like International Roadcheck allow us to take a focused, proactive approach to identifying safety concerns before they lead to serious incidents,” OFC. Smith said. “By working alongside our partners across North America, we are reinforcing the importance of proper maintenance, safe driving practices and accountability on our roadways.”
During last year’s International Roadcheck, 56,178 inspections were conducted in the United States, Canada and Mexico. North America’s top vehicle out-of-service violation was for defective service brakes, accounting for 24% of total vehicle out-of-service violations.
Vehicles that successfully complete a Level I or Level V inspection without critical violations may be issued a CVSA decal. These decals indicate compliance and typically exempt vehicles from re-inspection for a three-month period, allowing inspectors to prioritize those without current certification.
International Roadcheck is a CVSA program with participation by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada, and Mexico’s Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation.
In addition to checking vehicles, the annual event also serves as an educational opportunity, raising awareness among commercial vehicle operators and the general public about the importance of compliance with safety regulations. For more information about the CVE Division, visit KSP’s website.
