Kentucky State Police Investigates Fatal Collision in Breckinridge County
HARDINSBURG, Ky. (Nov. 18, 2022) – The Kentucky State Police (KSP) responded to a two-vehicle collision in Breckinridge Co. Friday afternoon that resulted in three fatalities.
On Nov. 17, at approximately 3:24 P.M. CST, KSP Post 4 received a call from the Breckinridge Co. Sheriff’s Office requesting assistance in investigating a two-vehicle collision near the intersection of KY 86 and 690 in Custer.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Charles Lucas, 59, of Irvington, was operating a 2013 Toyota pickup truck westbound on KY 86 when, for unknown reasons, he crossed into the path of a 2009 Ford Escape traveling eastbound. The Ford was being driven by Kenneth Smallwood, 37, of Harned.
Lucas was transported to Baptist Health Hardin, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Smallwood and a passenger in Lucas’ vehicle, Edna Lucas, 55, of Irvington, were pronounced deceased at the scene. A 3-year-old passenger in Smallwood’s vehicle was not injured.
The affected portion of KY 86 was closed for several hours so troopers could reconstruct the collision. KSP Post 4 was assisted at the scene by the Breckinridge Co. Sheriff’s Office, Breckinridge Co. EMS, and the Breckinridge Coroner’s Office. The collision remains under investigation by reconstructionist Tpr. Tyler Lynch.
