Kentucky State Police Promotes Shelby County Native to Major

FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 8, 2024) — Today, Kentucky State Police (KSP) Commissioner Phillip Burnett Jr. announced the promotion of Captain Eric J. Walker to East Troop Major in the Operations Division.

The East Troop includes Post 6 Dry Ridge, Post 7 Richmond, Post 8 Morehead, Post 9 Pikeville, Post 10 Harlan, Post 11 London, Post 13 Hazard and Post 14 Ashland.

Commissioner Burnett says Walker will bring experience and knowledge to the command staff.

For more than three decades, Major Walker has committed his life to the Kentucky State Police,” said Commissioner Burnett. “We are honored to have him serve on the executive command staff and look forward to the contributions he will bring in moving the agency forward.”

A 30-year veteran of the agency, Walker was promoted to sergeant in 1999, lieutenant in 2004 and captain in 2006, having served as commander of nine KSP operations, including both post and branch commands across multiple divisions.

“KSP’s mission is an integral part of my life,” says Major Walker. “I’m proud of the service-above-self that the Kentucky State Police represents, historically providing Kentuckians a variety of services they have come to both expect and need for over 75 years. I look forward to doing my part to ensure the successful delivery of exceptional police services to the commonwealth.”

Walker is a native of Shelby County where he resides with his wife, Marcia. He is a father of four and proud grandfather to eleven.

The mission of KSP is to promote public safety through service, integrity and professionalism using partnerships to prevent, reduce and deter crime and the fear of crime, enhance highway safety through education and enforcement, and safeguard property and protect individual rights.

The Beshear-Coleman Administration has taken several steps to support law enforcement while creating safer communities.

Gov. Beshear’s Forward, Together budget proposal further protects law enforcement officers while making Kentucky a leader in public safety. The Governor’s proposed budget includes an additional raise for KSP troopers and officers, an increased training stipend, an improved pension system for local and state law enforcement and funding for body armor.

Since taking office, Gov. Beshear has awarded more than $10 million in grant funding to assist state and local law enforcement agencies in purchasing the tools and resources that will not only allow them to protect Kentucky communities but will also ensure their safety as they stand on the front lines every day. In August, the administration awarded $2.1 million in grant funding to enhance public safety, curb the sale of illegal drugs and fight addiction.
