Shelby County Area Technology Students help Kentucky State Police with Crash Reconstruction Training

Once the project started, more classes became involved.

Frankfort, KY (May 10, 2019) — In 2018 the Kentucky State Police investigated 9,887 collisions. Of those collisions, 209 were fatal, resulting in the death of someone. Troopers trained in Collision Investigation and Reconstruction attempt to piece together the events that occurred prior to and during these serious collisions. One of the tools Troopers use to study and learn exactly how collisions occur is to stage collisions and then watch them as they happen, then taking that data and comparing it to what they have learned in the classroom.

The Critical Incident Response Team, who oversees the KSP Collision Reconstruction Program, constructed a plan to build a pulley system that allows Troopers to safely perform crash tests. Trooper Jack Hedges, a member of the Critical Incident Response Team, met with Mike Straight, a teacher with the Shelby County Area Technology Center, to discuss a partnership where a pulley system could be constructed. Mr. Straight recognized an educational value for his students in assisting with the project for Kentucky State Police and agreed to help with the pulley system.

Once the project started, more classes became involved. The project ended up utilizing students from various disciplines including welding, machine tool, as well as diesel, totaling 30 students working together on the project. On March 16th, their hard work will allow them to witness the first crash test using the system they built. In the future, these pulley systems will be used to train officers as well as prosecutors in the field of Collision Investigation and Reconstruction.
