Kentucky State Police Investigate Letcher County Shooting

McRoberts, Ky. (July 7, 2026) – On Monday, July 6, 2026, shortly after 4:00 p.m., Kentucky State Police, Post 13 in Hazard received a 911 call reporting a shooting on Sheas Fork in the McRoberts community of Letcher County.

Troopers responded to the scene and located an adult male suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel before being transported to Whitesburg ARH Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

The preliminary investigation identified Hibert Tackett, 65, of McRoberts, as the suspect. Tackett fled the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement but was later located and taken into custody without incident.

Tackett was charged with Assault 1st Degree and Tampering with Physical Evidence. He was lodged in the Letcher County Jail. The investigation remains ongoing and is being led by Detective Nathan Roark.
