Pedestrian Death on Interstate 64 in Carter County
GRAYSON, Ky. (April 11, 2026) – On April 10, 2026, at approximately 1:35 a.m., Kentucky State Police Post 14 received a call from Carter County 911 regarding a pedestrian being struck on Interstate 64 in the eastbound lanes near the 150 mile marker.
A preliminary investigation indicates that Anwarulhaq Safi, age 33, was operating a 2022 Freightliner Cascadia when the vehicle made an abrupt movement to the right, struck a guardrail, and traveled down a steep embankment before overturning onto its side.
Following the collision, Safi exited the vehicle, climbed the embankment, and entered the eastbound lanes of Interstate 64, where he was standing in the roadway. Safi was subsequently struck by a passenger vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Carter County Coroner’s Office.
The driver of the passenger vehicle was transported to King’s Daughters Medical Center for evaluation. A Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) conducted an assessment, and neither drugs nor alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor at this time.
The investigation remains ongoing by Troopers with Kentucky State Police Post 14.
