Kentucky State Police Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting in Henderson County

CORYDON, Ky. (June 10, 2025) – The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 16 Henderson has been requested by Henderson County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred June 9, just before 7:30 p.m. CT. Troopers and detectives arrived on the scene and initiated an investigation.

The preliminary investigation indicates HCSO was requested to respond to a disturbance in the one-hundred block of Eighth Street in Corydon, where a male individual was threatening family members with a machete. When deputies arrived, they encountered Mr. Charles Powell Jr., 64-year-old of Corydon. Mr. Powell refused to drop the machete and came at the responding deputy. During the interaction, the deputy discharged his agency-issued firearm, striking Mr. Powell, resulting in life-threatening injuries. The officer provided life-saving measures until EMS arrived; however, Mr. Powell succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital.

No officers were injured during the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing.

KSP has statewide jurisdiction and investigates officer-involved shootings throughout the commonwealth as requested by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. KSP is committed to being transparent while ensuring the integrity of the investigation. To protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, it is KSP’s standard operating procedure not to release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts have been gathered. Timelines to complete investigations vary based on the complexity of the case.
