Kentucky State Police Post 2 Winter Storm Preparation

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (January 23, 2026) – The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 2, in coordination with the National Weather Service are advising residents of an approaching significant winter storm expected to impact Kentucky with snow and ice. A State of Emergency has been activated for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

KSP urges citizens to prepare ahead of time and avoid last-minute preparations. Residents should use today (Friday) to stock up on food and essential supplies in the event of power outages or hazardous travel conditions.

Suggested emergency supplies include:

• Food and water

• Flashlights

• Extra batteries

• Candles

• Extra blankets

• Alternative heating sources

Please do not call 911 for road conditions, weather updates, or power outages. These calls can tie up emergency lines and delay response to life-threatening situations. 911 should only be used for emergencies. Emergency calls will be prioritized throughout the weekend, with critical incidents receiving first response.

Citizens are strongly encouraged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary, especially as road conditions worsen. If travel is unavoidable, ensure your vehicle is equipped with a winter safety kit, including warm clothing, blankets, water, a shovel, and other emergency supplies.
