Kentucky State Police Post 2 Joins National Cinco De Mayo Safety Initiative

Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort) targets driving under the influence.

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (May 5, 2025) – As celebrations ramp up for Cinco De Mayo, Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 2 will participate in Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness Reduction Effort) on May 5. This national traffic safety effort, coordinated through the International Association of Chiefs of Police, aims to reduce impaired-related crashes and save lives.

Holidays like Cinco De Mayo are a time for celebration, but they can quickly turn tragic when alcohol mixes with driving. We are asking Kentuckians to plan ahead, designate a sober driver and help us keep the roads safe for everyone. Our troopers are committed to protecting lives and that includes taking impaired drivers off the road before they cause harm.

Operation C.A.R.E. mobilizes law enforcement to increase visibility on highways and local roads, encouraging motorists to make safe decisions, especially when festivities and alcohol are involved. During this effort, KSP troopers will patrol Kentucky’s roadways to deter impaired driving and other risky behaviors behind the wheel.

Cinco de Mayo is traditionally a day to honor Mexican heritage and culture. The KSP encourages people to enjoy celebrating this special day while keeping these safety reminders in mind: • Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over – If you plan to drink, plan a safe ride home. Use a designated driver or a rideshare service. • Don’t Let Friends Drive Impaired – If you see someone trying to drive under the influence, step in. Offer to help them find a safe way home. • Wear Your Seatbelt – Buckling up is the simplest way to protect yourself during a crash. • Report Dangerous Drivers – If you see someone driving recklessly or distracted, report it to your local law enforcement agency. You can find your nearest KSP post by viewing the Post Map on KSP’s website.

KSP’s mission is to improve public safety, maintain critical services, and better reflect the diverse communities it serves. For more information about KSP’s commitment to creating a better Kentucky, click here.                                                                 # # #
