Kentucky State Police Post 2 conducts Death Investigation in Muhlenberg County

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (September 11 , 2026) –Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 2 was contacted by Muhlenberg County Dispatch on September 8, 2026, at approximately 11:37 a.m. CT, requesting assistance with a welfare check.

Deputies with the Muhlenberg County Sheriff’s Office advised that a caller had contacted their office requesting a welfare check at a residence on Twin Springs Road in Bremen, Kentucky. When deputies arrived at the residence, they located two gunshot victims inside the home and contacted KSP Dispatch for assistance.

Troopers arrived on scene and identified the victims as 57-year-old Patrick Kirk and 44-year-old Mary Stewart, both of Bremen, Kentucky. Both individuals had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.

On September 10, 2026, autopsies were conducted on both parties. A preliminary investigation indicates that Patrick Kirk fatally shot Mary Stewart before subsequently dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.The Muhlenberg County Coroner assisted KSP with the investigation. The victims’ families have been notified.

This investigation remains ongoing and is being led by Detective Jacob Stephens, U/1216, of the Kentucky State Police.
