Warren County Deputy Injured in Collision

Bowling Green, KY  (March 12, 2020)- The Kentucky State Police Post 3, Bowling Green received a call from the Warren County Sheriff’s Department requesting assistance in reference to an injury collision involving one of their deputies at Upper Stone Avenue near the intersection of Stone Lane.

The initial investigation indicated that Warren County Sheriff’s Deputy Phillip Gaines had just completed a call for service in the area and was traveling on Upper Stone Avenue.  Derek Cordell, 34 years old of Bowling Green, was operating a 2014 Chevrolet pickup while also traveling on Upper Stone Avenue. Cordell’s vehicle crossed the yellow centerline of the roadway into the path of travel of Deputy Gaines.  Cordell’s vehicle struck the Sheriff’s Department’s vehicle in the front driver’s side.

Deputy Gaines was flown to Vanderbilt Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the collision, and is listed in stable condition.  Derek Cordell was transported to the Medical Center where he was treated and released.  Cordell was arrested and is lodged in the Warren County Regional Jail charged with Assault 1st Degree (Police Officer), Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree (Police Officer), DUI 1st Offense (Aggravated Circumstance), Criminal Mischief 1st Degree.

The investigation is being conducted by Trooper Bartley Weaver.  He was assisted on the scene by Post 3 Troopers, Warren County Sheriff’s Department and Air Evac.  No further information is available for release at this time.
