Kentucky State Police Investigates Fatal Collision in Nelson County

BARDSTOWN, Ky. (August 30, 2025) – The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 4 and Kentucky Fish and Wildlife responded to a two-vehicle head on collision in Nelson County Thursday morning that resulted in a fatality.

On August 30, 2025, around 3:20 a.m. EDT, KSP Post 4 received a call from Kentucky Fish and Wildlife to assist with the investigation of a fatal collision near the 6900 block of Bloomfield Road involving a pickup truck and a passenger car.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a Ford F-250, operated by Gavin Sims, 22, of Bardstown, was traveling on Bloomfield Road when, for unknown reasons, he crossed the center line and struck a Ford Fusion, operated by John Cecil, 34, of Bloomfield.  Cecil was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Nelson County Coroner’s Office. Sims and several other passengers were transported to local area hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries.

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, Nelson County Fire Department, Nelson County EMS, the Nelson County Road Department and the Nelson County Coroner’s Office assisted KSP on scene. An autopsy and toxicology results have been requested and the investigation remains ongoing by reconstructionist Trooper Scott Wheatley.
