Kentucky State Police Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting in Kenton County

INDEPENDENCE, Ky. (Feb. 1, 2026) -The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) has been requested by Post 6 Dry Ridge to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026, around 7:30 a.m. EST in Kenton County.

The preliminary investigation indicates that officers from the Independence Police Department and the Kenton County Police Department were responding to a call from Mr. David Works, 62 years old, who was threatening self-harm at a residence on Sharpsburg Drive, Independence, Ky. Upon their arrival, officers attempted to make contact with Mr. Works. A short time later, he emerged from the residence with a firearm. Officers discharged their agency-issued weapons, fatally striking Mr. Works. First aid was attempted, but Mr. Works succumbed to his injuries. No officers were injured during the incident. 

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing. KSP has statewide jurisdiction and investigates officer-involved shootings throughout the commonwealth as requested by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. KSP is committed to being transparent while ensuring the integrity of the investigation. To protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, it is KSP’s standard operating procedure not to release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts gathered. Timelines for completing investigations vary depending on the complexity of the case.
