Kentucky State Police Post 7 Encourages Safe and Sober Driving During Thanksgiving Holiday

RICHMOND, Ky. (November 26, 2025) — As Kentuckians prepare to gather with loved ones this Thanksgiving, the Kentucky State Police (KSP) is reminding drivers to make safety a top priority before hitting the road. Thanksgiving weekend remains one of the busiest travel periods of the year, with thousands of motorists traveling Kentucky’s interstates, highways and rural roads.

To promote safe travel, KSP will take part in Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort), a national traffic safety initiative coordinated by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. From Wednesday, November 26 through Sunday, November 30, KSP troopers will increase patrols across the commonwealth to identify and deter impaired, distracted and aggressive driving behaviors.

“Thanksgiving is a time to reconnect and celebrate with family and friends, but it’s also a time when we see an increase in crashes caused by impaired or careless driving,” KSP Post 7 Commander, Scott Felder, said. “Our goal is to keep Kentucky’s roads safe by encouraging responsible choices behind the wheel.”

KSP reminds motorists to follow these safety tips throughout the holiday weekend:

  • Plan Ahead: If your celebration includes alcohol, arrange a safe ride before drinking. Use a designated driver, rideshare service or stay overnight.
  • Buckle Up: Seat belts save lives and remain your best defense against injury in a crash. It’s the law.
  • Report Unsafe Drivers: If you observe dangerous driving or hazardous conditions, contact your nearest KSP Post or local law enforcement agency.

KSP encourages all Kentuckians to drive responsibly, remain patient in traffic and allow extra travel time during the holiday rush. Together, we can make Kentucky’s roadways safer for everyone this Thanksgiving season.
