Powell County Officer Involved Shooting

CITY, KY. (Date) –Kentucky State Police Post 8 Morehead received a call for assistance from the Powell County Sheriff’s Department with an officer involved shooting. Powell County Deputy Sheriff Edwards located an individual sitting in a vehicle at the 16 mile marker on the Mountain Parkway at approximately 2:51 am. Deputy Edwards was informed that the vehicle had been stolen during his investigation. The male subject, Donald Lewis II, 38 years old, of Louisville, exited the vehicle shoved Deputy Edwards in an attempt to elude him on foot and ran toward an occupied pick up truck that was parked on the emergency lane of the Mountain Parkway. Mr. Lewis forced his way into the pick up and attempted to overtake control of the vehicle. Deputy Edwards then discharged his agency issued firearm into the tires in an attempt to disable the vehicle. Mr. Lewis then exited the vehicle and took control of Deputy Edward’s police cruiser. Deputy Edward’s discharged his agency issued firearm striking the Powell County police cruiser.
Donald Lewis II continued to travel east on the Mountain Parkway when Clay City Police Department and Stanton Police Department initiated a pursuit on the stolen police cruiser. Mr. Lewis exited the Mountain Parkway and traveled north on KY 213 into Montgomery County where a Montgomery County Deputy Sheriff joined the pursuit. Mr. Lewis then turned around and started traveling south on KY 213 before turning onto KY 615. While on KY 615, Trooper Faulkner came into contact with Donald Lewis II and pursued him with the other agencies onto Lower Hatcher’s Creek where Mr. Lewis entered into a field and got stuck. Mr. Lewis was placed under arrest and lodged in the Powell County Detention Center. Donald Lewis II is charged with Fleeing or Evading Police, 1st Degree (motor vehicle), Operating Motor Vehicle under the Influence Alc/Drugs/Etc, 1st Offense and Resisting Arrest. This incident remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police Morehead.
